Day 3 - A loop around the Larrapinta track

We set off early to drive the Larrapinta track, which is all sealed highway these days, visiting landmarks along the way. It was about a 450km drive and 34 degrees.

Flynn’s grave- he founded a mission to the outback which became the flying doctor service amongst other things. His grave is marked with a sacred stone from the local indigenous people.

Simpson’s gap - a split or gap in the West MacDonnell range. There were rock wallabies but pretty hard to spot them!

Standley Chasm - another split in the range and source of artesian water. Access controlled by the local people who charge an entry fee. Fire came through a year or 2 back so it is extra desolate.

Ellery Creek big hole - swimming hole.  Pleasant but on the murky side for Kiwi tastes. Didn’t go in!

Ochre pits - traditional source of different coloured ochres. A few pesky flies meant the high fashion fly net came out.

Glen Helen - a back country “resort”. Well known for its actual flowing water but suffering from the drought and quite depleted. Still a lovely spot, but hot!

Gosse bluff - enormous meteor crater with sides pushed up by the ancient impact, sitting incongruously in the middle of the vast plains.

Then back home to watch the sunset from ANZAC hill in Alice.
